Cover Reveal & Giveaway: Flicker & Burn

Hi Inklings!

I’ve returned from my holiday hibernation to bring you a pretty awesome cover reveal and giveaway! T.M. Goeglein, author of Cold Fury, has a super special, two-for-one cover reveal…Cold Fury has been redesigned, as well as the second installment in the Cold Fury trilogy…Flicker & Burn!

Cold Fury in paperback will be released in June 2013 and Flicker & Burn comes roaring onto the scene in August 2013! COLDFURYnewcompsAAA

FLICKER & BURN

The thrill ride that began in Cold Fury kicks into high gear in Flicker & Burn, as the threats to Sara Jane Rispoli come at her from all directions. She continues the desperate search for her missing family, but this time she’s on the run from creepy beings with red, pulsing eyes and ghostly white skin chasing her through the streets of Chicago in black ice cream trucks – they can only be described as Ice Cream Creatures. They're skeletal and ferocious, hell-bent on catching or killing her, but also a weird link to her family, a clue to where they might be and who has them.

While Sara Jane battles these new pursuers, she learns painful lessons about the phenomenon that possesses her, cold fury. At the same time, she’s uncovering buried secrets about the misdeeds of her family – old murders and blood vendettas – that might be connected to the disappearance of her mom, dad, and brother. The mysteries, violence, and constant state of chasing or being chased could be the undoing of her relationship with handsome Max Kissberg. Despite the love growing between them, Sara Jane can’t tell him the truth about her life, and fears for his safety.

Not only do the Ice Cream Creatures display the grisly amputated finger of her mom to prove their viciousness, and not only does Lucky, the Outfit Boss of Bosses, whistle in Sara Jane for a sit-down with deadly consequences, but her gorgeous cousin, Heather Richards, enters the scene, as well. All that matters to Sara Jane is saving her family and keeping everyone she loves alive and safe. But the forces she encounters, both external and the ones crackling inside of her, fight her every step of the way.

Event Recap & Giveaway: Brigid Kemmerer’s Spark Launch Party

IMG_1120Hi Guys! Hope you are all having a fantastic weekend. Not to brag but so far mine has been way past excellent! I was lucky enough to attend Brigid Kemmerer’s Spark Launch party at the Barnes and Noble in Ellicot City, MD today (Brigid told me she would have candy… that’s when I knew I had to go).

After picking up 2 copies of Spark at the register, I settled down in the café area with a delicious Caramel Frappuccino since I was a bit early. Soon enough the announcement I had been waiting for came over the loud speakers. Showtime!

I grabbed a seat in the back row not wanting to block anyone’s view with my height and was lucky enough to meet some awesome bloggers in the process! Alexa Abee, from Writing the Universe and Nadah from Reading, Writing, & Coffee arrived sporting these awesome t-shirts!

IMG_1111

I’m only jealous I didn’t think of the idea myself! They were surprisingly stylish! Brigid freaked when she saw them. It was clear she was very touched and blown away by their support. Later, during the discussion, we learned that they actually made her cry! Aww… Alexa and Nadah – You two are awesome!

IMG_1114
IMG_1118 IMG_1116

Brigid proceeded to tell us a bit about Spark and her writing process. I guess, not having ever written a book myself, I didn’t realize how much research went into it! She talked about how she exchanged several emails a week with her local fire chief regarding the book. It was obvious from her discussion the extent of work that went into writing Spark!

Sometimes during the discussion, it was as if I was at a comedy club with the hilarious banter between Brigid and her husband, Michael. Those two were a trip and definitely kept us entertained. She also read an excerpt from Spark involving a house fire! It made me want to pick the book up as soon as I got home. I think Carnival of Souls would have been a bit jealous though…

Then came the prizes! That’s right, you heard me, PRIZES! Brigid had several gift cards to give away to some lucky attendees. Unfortunately I didn’t win anything, but how cool is that!?

IMG_1126

And lastly, was the signing. I picked up a copy for myself and one to give away to you guys! You can enter to win using the rafflecopter form below. Overall it was a fantastic time! Hope she will do the same when book three, Spirit, releases.

Special thanks to Brigid for having us at the party and to Amber from The Musings of ALMYBNENR for letting me know about this great event!

Except a shy sophomore named Layne, a brainiac who dresses in turtlenecks and jeans and keeps him totally off balance. Layne understands family problems, and she understands secrets. She has a few of her own.

What can we expect from you in the future!?
I just finished up the Kindred Curse Anthology, a collection of five vampire short stories for adults. This was sort of a 'guilty pleasure' writing experience for me. The vampires are now all out of my system!

I am currently finishing up The Akasha Series. 'Water' and 'Air' are now available as e-books, and 'Fire' will be released in October 2012. The final book of the series, 'Earth', is due out Spring 2013.
Although The Akasha Series has been fun, my thoughts are already on my next project. I am planning another eco-fantasy series, this time with mermaids and werewolves. I am in the research stages now, reading up on popular werewolf and mermaid books, and cutting out pictures for a large 'underwater' collage. The visual helps me write! A beta first chapter has been posted here.

No one said returning to her pack would be easy, especially after ten years without them, but seventeen year old Caia Ribeiro is unprepared for the realities of the transition. Raised in a world where kids aren’t scared by bedtime tales of the bogeyman but by the real life threat of enemy supernaturals who might come creeping into their community to kill them in their sleep, Caia is used to the darkness; she’s used to the mystery and the intrigue of the ancient underworld war she’s bound to by chance of birth. What she’s having trouble with are pack members treating her with wary suspicion, the Elders tucking secrets behind their backs out of her sightline, and her young Alpha, Lucien, distracting her, with a dangerous attraction, from her decision to uncover the truth.

But as the saying goes ‘the truth will out’ and when it does, Caia will only have so long to prepare herself before the war comes pounding on their door threatening to destroy the safe, secret lives of the wolves… and the girl they protect.

I'm working on the sequel, Soul Bound.  It's about the daughter of the goddess of witchcraft and the moon... and the son of the god of the sun.  They have conflicting powers which could kill them... and she's cursed.

Kept leashed in the cellar by a master who is as ruthless as he is powerful, Pride dreams of freedom, of living a normal life, but escape from the compound is near impossible and disobedience comes with a price.

When she learns her master intends to breed her she knows she has to run.

Pride soon learns if she is to survive in the wild, she must trust in the boy who promises her freedom, the same boy she was sent to hunt.

With life and death hanging in the balance the two find themselves on the run from the Paranormal Task Force—officers who shoot first and ask questions later—as well as her master’s handlers.

Can Pride flee the man who has held her captive since birth and find sanctuary in the arms of a boy who has captured her heart? Or will her master find her first?

About Chelsea

Chelsea lives in Phoenix, AZ where she spends most of her time writing young adult fiction, painting murals, and avoiding housework at all costs. Her obsessions include: superheroes, coffee, sleeping-in, and crazy socks. She lives with her husband and two children, who graciously tolerate her inability to resist teenage drama on TV and her complete lack of skill in the kitchen.

Please describe Anew using only 5 words!

Mysteries, curses, forbidden love, sacrifice.

What can we expect from you in the future!?

I am currently working on a YA thriller (dum-dum-dumm), a Christmas love story (because who doesn't love snow and cozy kisses?), and a science fiction romance (because, clearly, I can't decide which genre I should write in, haha)

Author Interview: Ari Marmell & Giveaway

Ari MarmellI’m super excited to have Ari Marmell, author of Thief’s Covenant, here at Inklings Read to tell us a bit about his writing and first venture into the young adult fantasy genre!
Q. First off, It's a pleasure to have you here at Inklings Read! I was reading up on your background a bit and noticed you wrote several fantasy books and guides. What inspired you to venture into the YA genre? How did you have to change your approach when writing for a YA audience?
Quite honestly, it happened almost by accident. The very earliest drafts of what would become Thief's Covenant weren't written as YA. It just happened to come out in such a way that, as my agent at the time pointed out, it wouldn't take much rewriting to change it into a YA book.

Some of the reasons for doing so were purely clinical--such as the fact that the book was too short for most publishers to publish as an adult fantasy. But the truth is, I liked the idea of branching out into YA. I was about that same age when I first really began devouring fantasy fiction. Many of the authors I read back then still stick with me, and are responsible for my love of reading. I love the idea of just maybe being that writer for someone else.

As far as changing my approach, they were all fairly minor. It involves writing about a younger protagonist than I did in any of my other books, but Widdershins was always meant to be fairly so young, so that wasn't really an issue. I toned down the blood and violence a little bit, but not much. (And yes, that will come as a surprise to people who read the fairly bloody prologue, but it's true.) And Widdershins herself isn't as dark of a main character as many of my others.
Thief's CovenantQ. I LOVE the cover of Thief's Covenant! It's what initially drew me to the book. What role did you play (if any) in the design of the cover?
The artist, Jason Chan--a god among illustrators, if I may say so--provided Pyr Books and me with a selection of rough sketch ideas he had. My editor and I talked it over and chose the one we liked best, and that's the one he turned into the full cover design.

So, I had a little input, but pretty much all the credit is due to Jason.

(By the way, just for giggles, I gave Widdershins her own Facebook page. If anyone wants to see those preliminary sketches, I got permission from Jason to put them up there. Just look for "Widdershins" in the FB search bar.)
Q. What do you think sets Thief's Covenant apart from other YA fantasy books?
I'd start with the setting. The modern speculative fiction market in YA is either near-future science fiction or modern/urban fantasy. While there certainly are plenty of traditional fantasy YA novels, the majority of them are a bit older. I like the idea of brining traditional fantasy back to a position of equal prominence in YA. (Not that I'm likely to accomplish that by myself, but...)

I think the combination of a Renaissance-inspired setting, rather than the more common Medieval, and the peculiar religious system at the heart of the culture, would also qualify as setting the book somewhat apart.

And I'd like to think that Widdershins herself--particularly her unique relationship with Olgun--stands out as well.

Speaking of whom...

hours lost chatting on twitter,

later and I’m still here today! I couldn’t be more enthused about what this year will bring. I’m already looking forward to BEA in June (my first big book event)!

So, cheers to all of you for making this experience as wonderful as it has been! Here’s to new friends, new books, and another (hopefully) fantastic year. ANYWAY, I think I've blabbered on enough...
